SCR: The Smart Answer to EPA 2010

SCR Lets You Run Smart

EPA 2010 regulations mandate a 90 percent cut in NOx emissions from 1994 levels. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) from Detroit Diesel and Cummins is Freightliner’s choice to meet these regulations.

What is SCR Technology?

SCR emissions technology is designed to bring heavy-duty diesel emissions to post-EPA 2010 standards.

  1. Your Freightliner truck will be equipped with a Detroit Diesel (or Cummins) exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) engine.
  2. After the exhaust leaves the engine, it runs through a diesel oxidation catalyst and a diesel particulate filter to remove soot and particulate matter.
  3. Then the exhaust is combined with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), sent through a final catalyst to remove NOx and finally water and nitrogen are released into the air.

By running the engine hotter, the engine builds up more NOx and generates less particulate matter. This allows the engine to perform more fuel efficiently, but also requires the use of SCR to reduce the additional NOx. The end result is an engine that provides great performance, great fuel economy and meets the EPA 2010 regulations.

Why SCR?

Freightliner selected SCR technology because it allows drivers to run smart. It actually improves an engines fuel efficiency by up to 5 percent and is simple to operate.

The makers of SCR technology have been teaming up with DEF manufacturers and distributors to supply more than 2,500 North American locations to sell DEF by 2010.

With all the distribution locations — combined with the fact that you can go up to 7,500 miles on a single tank of DEF — you should never run out.

What is Detroit Diesel BlueTec SCR Technology?

BlueTec

BlueTec emissions technology is the name of Detroit Diesel's SCR emission system. BlueTec has been used by Daimler in Europe since 2005, and on more than 200,000 trucks. Detroit Diesel has more than 20 million miles of testing in North America with BlueTec emission technology.

Every DD13™, DD15™ and DD16™ from Detroit Diesel built in 2010 is equipped with BlueTec emissions technology.

What is Cummins SCR Technology?

Cummins SCR technology is comprised of the basic components of other SCR system — DOC, DPF and SCR catalyst. The Cummins SCR system combined with its engine line-up (ISB, ISC and ISX) will offer some great benefits for customers in 2010. The combination will deliver better fuel economy, excellent performance, improved throttle response and a large operating “sweet spot” compared to 2007 engines.
